  • textAfter Seth Rich’s death, some online narratives falsely claimed that he—not Russian hackers—was the source of the leaked DNC emails in 2016. This narrative was used by some groups to undermine U.S. intelligence findings, which had concluded that Russian cyber operations were responsible for hacking the DNC. As a result, Russia became central to many conspiracy theories, either as the supposed real target of a “cover-up” or as a way to challenge the U.S. government’s public assessment of Russian interference. However, every official investigation, including findings by the U.S. intelligence community, FBI, and multiple federal court filings, concluded that there is no evidence whatsoever linking Seth Rich to the leaks or to Russia. The conspiracy theory was later retracted by several major media outlets, and courts ruled that there was no factual basis to the claims.
